Journey from Fire
The theme of GICB 2011 is 'Journey from Fire'. Here the focus is 'Journey.'
Founded in 2001, GICB will be held for the sixth time this year. Based on the long and glorious tradition of ceramics in this region, GICB has been held to revive the uniqueness and potential of world contemporary ceramics from viewpoints of culture, art, and industry. Of course, GICB does not intend to emphasize ceramics as a unique genre irrelevant to other genres of art or the world of mundane life.
The goal set for GICB2011 is, rather, to cross the boundary of 'ceramics' and to fuse with other genres of art paradoxically, and to be more deeply involved with the 'world of everyday living' in order to discover the full potential of ceramics suited to the new environment of the 21st century.
To fulfill its mission, GICB embarks on a 'journey.' This is a journey of adventurous exploration bound for the vast outside world rather than returning to the inside of 'ceramics'. It is to find new values of ceramics in the wide, untrodden wilderness. This attempt is far from searching for the comfort of the time-honored, glorious tradition of ceramics. This journey is more like a nomadic wandering, leaving for a strange, uncertain place.
The world of ceramics has enjoyed unrivaled glory along with the cultural anthropological enthusiasm towards settled living. Thus, this nomadic journey can not only be strange but at times frightening. However, such glorious tradition is also only a journey of long space-time. In order for ceramics to continue its glory amid the turbulence of the 21st century, now is time to start another adventurous journey.
