The Objective

2013BIENNALE

The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale was first founded in 2001, and at the time all spotlight, both in Korea and internationally, was given to this single event by ceramists, specialists and anyone related to the art field. It received much praise.

Yet as it continued one after the other, its direction became vague and less definite. Soon the biennale's objective and aim was questioned. It reached a point where re-evaluation and adjustment became inescapable and measures were taken to retain its original significance. Since May, 2012 after accepting the position as director for the 2013, 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB 2013), I proposed the notion of 'sharing' as a means to resolve the problems and issues surrounding the biennale. The reason for choosing this particular subject is because the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale has over the years received much attention and respect from within Korea and the world. I believe that the time has come for Korea and its ceramic scene to pay back what it had received previously. So the international committee members and specialists associated with the biennale gathered in Korea. The intention was to seek for a way of sharing information, knowledge and artistic views with the rest of the world in order for more people to participate whether directly or indirectly.

The objective is to share the event with as many people around the world as possible including young artists, established artists, ceramic educators, gallerists, specialists and more. Another aspect which I hope to consider is an attempt to involve the less-fortunate people in the world, for instance people who are discriminated, neglected and isolated. To implement the notion of sharing it is crucial to communicate, exchange views and to collaborate. All of these methods are the elements required to establish a community. I feel that this is what we need today more than anything else.

The 2013, 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale hopes to share the essence of clay as a medium, in that it hopes to co-exist and survive today in a world that is becoming more and more heartless, self-orientated and isolated. The main theme this year is "Community - with me, with you, with us", and it signifies the notion of co-existence and living together. The event itself consists of the main and the special exhibitions, international ceramic symposium, workshops and other venues.

We hope to show the greatness in sharing and we hope you will come to witness this!
