About the Events

2013BIENNALE

The 2013, 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB 2013) offers a diverse range of venues including the main exhibition, special exhibition, workshops for ceramic professionals as well as for the general public, and the international ceramic symposium.

Over the past thirteen years, the event has seen many changes and among them perhaps the transition from the international competition format to an open invitational competition is most significant. The change has been implemented after studying the current condition of the ceramic world and instead of assessing individual ability, GICB 2013 believes that it is more important to examine and investigate on how each chosen participant is able to contribute to the development of contemporary ceramics and also to understand how they are perceived in the ceramic world. Furthermore the focus has been on discovering new talents and enabling them to establish their own artistic career. This year young artists were selected for the special exhibition firstly by receiving open entries and then selecting the final 20 through a screening process.

GICB 2013 believes that these young artists are the future leaders of contemporary ceramics and they are the new energy continuing in the same caliber as the artists who have participated in this event since ten years ago.

GICB 2013 hopes to show a new dimension through the 'HOT Rookies' special exhibition, 'Mentoring Camp' workshop and 'Talks by Artists' academic program. Unlike the previous years, all the venues link together under the notion of communication through 'healing', 'exploring' and 'sharing', and this applies particularly to the workshop venues.

Ceramics, which has co-existed with the development of civilization, has today become the tool and expressive medium for culture, art and spirit. GICB 2013 sincerely hopes for its value to be realized while shedding light on the important message embedded within the field. We hope to share these invaluable qualities in ceramics, 'with me, with you, with us' as a 'community'.
