  • Duration : April 26 – June 30, 2019
  • Place : Gallery 1, Gallery 2, Gallery 3
  • Number of works exhibited : 114 pieces from the KOCEF collection

Thinking Hands has been arranged to shed light on working with hands, which has always been important in enhancing imagination in that it boosts memory and creativity. Presented at the exhibition are 114 works involving hands selected from the collection of the KOCEF and acquired over the last 20 years.

‘Thinking Hands’ has six parts: Thinking Hands of Great Artists, History Recorded by Hands, Narratives about Life, Clay Expressed by Hands, Crafts and Design, and Creative Hands-on Activities.

Gallery 1 presents Thinking Hands of Great Artists. Ceramic sculptures by great artists from twenty-five countries are shown, including masterpieces by Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio only in the collection of KOCEF in Korea.

Gallery 2 presents four sections: History Recorded by Hands, Narratives about Life, Clay Expressed by Hands, and Crafts and Design. History Recorded by Hands introduces the history of the KOCEF and the Korean International Ceramic Biennale through the archives. Narratives about Life tells stories about what’s happening in everyday living all around us. Clay Expressed by Hands features interesting works that show properties of clay expressed by the hands of potters. Crafts and Design introduces ceramic works produced by master potters in collaboration with designers and geometric ceramic works of outstanding design.

Gallery 3 offers a wide variety of educational hands-on programs associated with the exhibition. The Children’s Educational Program helps children appreciate the exhibits while listening to the stories told by a docent and learn about museum etiquette from a qualified instructor. Painting with Red Clay invites children to paint with red clay slip using their hands. The Collection Manager’s Job helps children observe ceramics and teaches them how to fill out collection management cards. Self-portrait Made with Clay helps children make their own faces with clay. Experimenting with Hands offers children many interesting hands-on activities including painting, a kinetic sand game, a soft block game, and pressing clay stamps.
