Ceramic Wine Vessels

  • Duration : April 21 ~ December 31, 2012
  • Venue : Gallery 1, Bandal Art Museum, Yeoju

Ceramic Wine Vessels is a special exhibition that reflects how wine and ceramics interact with each other. This exhibition will show how perfectly 'Korean wine' suits 'Korean ceramics' and make suggestions for a 'refined wine culture.' Shedding light on the interrelationship between wine and ceramics, the exhibition will introduce Korean wine and provide information wine lovers need.

Seongho saseol (Collected Works of Seongho), an old book by Yi Ik (1681~1763), states, “Wine is the best of all medicines, but excessive drinking could poison even the soul of man.” Such being the case, wine drinking etiquette entails relishing and savoring the taste while respecting wine drinking table manners. It is a well known fact that the bouquet and taste of wine can vary significantly depending on the wine glass in which it is served. Thus, serving Korean wine in traditional Korean vessels is basic Korean wine drinking etiquette.

In his poem 'Drinking Alone by Moonlight,' Li Bai, a famous poet of Tang China, compared clear rice wine to a saint and unrefined rice wine to a wise man. In other words, to experience the taste of Korean wine in a ceramic wine cup, which is a product of one thousand years of tradition, is to become a sage.

This exhibition intends to introduce drinking etiquette with such elegance through ceramic art imbued with the soul of Korean culture. Ceramic Wine Vessels will be an interesting exhibition where the taste and bouquet of wine and elegance and style of ceramics are presented at one place. It will consider ceramic vessels for wine appetizers, which are indispensable for wine drinking, along with role of wine cups, which are important in setting the "wine table." At no other place than the wine table can we more deeply share the happiness, anger, and sorrows of our lives.
